Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is a condition where there is laxity in the sphincter at the bottom of the oesophagus which allows reflux of stomach contents into the gullet. While the symptoms, which include heartburn, the taste of acid in the mouth and even regurgitation of food, can be reduced by preventing acid production, the actual reflux itself will only be reduced by either reducing abdominal pressure (i.e., usually, losing weight) or by strengthening the tone of the sphincter, which may require surgery.
