Dysphagia
Dysphagia means difficulty with swallowing. This can arise from problems in the throat (see head section) but may also arise where there is a blockage in the oesophagus. This can come about as a result of the development of a stricture following irritation and ulceration produced by chronic acid reflux, or it may be because of the development of Cancer. Initially patients find it difficult to swallow solids, but as the blockage increases, even liquids become difficult. Rarely it may be due to problems with the nerve supply, as in conditions such as myasthenia gravis. Persistent dysphagia requires investigation.
