Dysphagia

Dysphagia means difficulty with swallowing. This can arise from problems in the throat (see head section) but may also arise where there is the sensation of a blockage in the oesophagus. This can occur in adolescents with chronic acid reflux causing irritation of the lining of the oesophagus. Dietary change might help, as may agents that reduce acid production in the stomach. Occasionally it is due to infection by helicobacter pylori - and persistent symptoms may need to be investigated.
