Cancer of the Oesophagus
Cancer of the oesophagus arises in the cells of the mucous lining. These cells are normally squamous cells, and they produce a squamous cell carcinoma. If there has been chronic acid reflux, causing oesophagitis, the cells may change into columnar cells. This is the condition known as Barrett's oesophagus. The cells may go on to develop a different cancer, called an adenocarcinoma. This is more difficult to treat. It is important that Barrett's oesophagus is treated before it develops into a cancer, which is why persistent heartburn should be investigated.
