The Nose is the most prominent part of our face, and is positioned so that it can fulfil its three functions - protection of the lower airways, breathing, and smelling - with maximum efficiency. The newborn baby and the suckling infant are what is described as obligate nose breathers - which means that they usually do not breathe through their mouths (which is obviously the case if the mouth is filled by a nipple or a teat). The baby with a blocked nose has to choose between breathing and feeding, which is why snuffly babies sometimes feed poorly, get frustrated and scream and cry, which makes the snuffles worse and causes them to swallow air, which gives them colic. Blocked noses in snuffly babies can be cleared using normal saline nose drops. | |||
