Snoring

Snoring is common in children who have enlarged adenoids - the glands at the back of the nose which are part of our lymphatic tissue, like the tonsils. They enlarge in response to chronic infection, and besides causing snoring they can block the nose (so the child walks around with his mouth open in order to breathe) they can block the Eustachian tube between the middle ear and the back of the throat, which can produce glue ear (see ear in the head section). Children who snore, who can't breathe through their noses and have very large tonsils and adenoids may benefit from the opinion of a surgeon.
