Catarrh

Catarrh is caused by the excessive secretion of mucous by the mucous membranes. We normally produce about 500 mls a day, but as a result of allergy or infection this increases. If the infection is due to bacteria rather than viruses, then antibiotics may help to reduce it. It's made worse by irritants such as cigarette smoke. Excessively dry atmospheres damage the mucous membrane and cause it to swell and produce more mucous.
