Thyroglossal Cyst

Thyroglossal cyst is the name given to a swelling in the midline of the neck, just above the Adam's apple. The thyroid gland develops from the back of the tongue and moves down to lie in the front of the neck. There is a tract between the two which usually disappears. A thyroglossal cyst occurs when this fails to disappear. Unlike other swellings in the neck this moves up and down when the tongue goes in and out. It may lie dormant and appear only in early adolescence. A surgical opinion might be of value.
