Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is degeneration caused by autoimmune damage to joints, which occurs when our immune system attacks the lining of the joint. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is not an uncommon disease and can present with a swollen joint in the young child, or with a feverish illness and lots of joint involvement (see the bone and joint section). The cervical spine may be particularly at risk in some patients, making them liable to dangerous injury as well as subject to pain and disability. Treatment may involve anti-inflammatory agents together with medication designed to suppress the immune system, including steroids.
