Thyroid Swelling
Thyroid swellings may be one-sided or bilateral. The thyroid lays either side of the larynx - the voice box or Adam's apple. One-sided swellings are usually caused by cysts in the thyroid, but they may be caused by tumours, though Cancer of the thyroid is rare in children. Enlargement of the whole thyroid may be caused by inflammation - thyroiditis - or result from failure of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland moves up and down as we swallow, so swellings arising from it do so too. Any swelling needs to be investigated, since Cancer of the thyroid is curable if treated early.
