Thyroid Swelling

Thyroid swellings may be one-sided or bilateral. The thyroid lays either side of the Adam's apple. One-sided swellings are usually caused by cysts in the thyroid, but they may be caused by tumours. Enlargement of the whole thyroid may be caused by inflammation - thyroiditis - or result from failure of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland moves up and down as we swallow, so swellings arising from it also do.

Any swelling needs to be investigated, since it may be cancer of the thyroid. This is curable if treated early.
