Dry Mouth Syndrome
Dry mouth syndrome can occur in conjunction with other disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis when there is also dry eyes, due to failure of the salivary glands, or diabetes mellitus, where it is associated with increased thirst, but is usually caused by anxiety. It can cause the tongue to become dry and the taste buds become blocked by plugs of keratin, and so the tongue appears black or furry. The treatment for this is to use a mouthwash and clean the tongue using a toothbrush.
