Cleft Palate

Cleft palate is a developmental abnormality which may or may not be associated with a cleft lip. It is due to failure of fusion of the tissue that makes the palate and face. It may be genetically determined. Surgery is necessary to prevent food passing up into the nasal cavity and down the nose, and to improve the cosmetic appearance of the lips.
