Mouth

The Mouth extends from the lips to the fauces, in front of the tonsils, at the start of the throat. It contains the gums and the teeth and the tongue, together with salivary glands which secrete fluids that lubricate our food as we eat. Its function is speech, the start of digestion, and facial expression.

The roof of the mouth consists of the hard palate at the front and the soft palate at the back. The floor of the mouth consists mainly of the tongue, whose movement is controlled by a number of muscles attached to bones in the neck. At the front and sides of the tongue there are a number of taste buds. These respond to different tastes at different places - sweet and salty at the tip, sour at the sides and bitter at the back.
