Lung

Respiration means two things: it is the process of breathing, and the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the tissues. When we breathe in the ribcage expands and the diaphragm - the muscle between the chest cavity and the abdomen - contracts. This increases the volume of the chest cavity and air is drawn in. We breathe out as a result of the relaxation of the muscles between the ribs, and of the diaphragm. The volume of the chest reduces, and air is pushed out.
