Atypical Pneumonia

Atypical pneumonia (atypical means not typical) is the term used to describe a group of chest conditions where there are the symptoms of pneumonia which persist despite treatment with penicillin, and where the chest X-ray signs look much worse than the patient. There are a number of causes: Legionella pneumonia is caused by infection with the agent legionnella pneumophilla. This likes to grow in warm still water, and is helped by the presence of algae. This is why there are commonly epidemics amongst groups of people who have recently stayed in hotels in warm environments where there has been colonisation of the air conditioning system.
