Atelectasis

Atelectasis is the name given to any part of the lung where the alveoli are not open, so the lung is not functioning. In the newborn premature infant it may be due to lack of surfactant - the wetting agent required to overcome the surface tension of the alveolar walls. In the older child it can be caused by obstruction of the bronchiole leading to that part of the lung (by an inhaled peanut, for example) or by infection.
