Aspiration Pneumonia

Aspiration pneumonia occurs when there is inhalation of the contents of the pharynx into the lungs. It is a complication of people with swallowing difficulties, particularly following strokes (see the brain) or in those with oesophageal disorders (see the oesophagus). Since the germs involved are often anaerobic the antibiotic used to treat these infections must be effective against these organisms.
