Asbestosis

Asbestosis occurs in reaction to exposure to the fibres of asbestos, usually many years after the start of exposure. It produces fibrous changes in the supporting tissues of the lung, and it may also cause fibrosis of the pleural membrane. This means that the lungs become stiff and breathing difficult. In rare cases there can be malignant change in some of the cells of the pleura - mesothelial cells - to produce a malignant mesothelioma. While the symptoms may be helped by radiotherapy, it is not curative.
