Cysts

Cysts are fluid filled sacks or spaces. There are a number of conditions which result in the presence of a number of cysts in the liver - called polycystic liver disease. The most important in the adult is inherited as an autosomal dominant disease (if one parent has it, statistically half of the offspring will also develop it) and in many cases is associated with similar cysts in the kidney. No treatment is required unless the cysts are large, or complicated by haemorrhage or infection. Cysts affecting the kidneys may affect kidney function.

Polycystic disease affecting infants is a more serious condition which may require transplantation.
