Cholangitis

Cholangitis is inflammation of the biliary tree - that part of the liver concerned with the secretion and transport of bile. Rarely this is due to an autoimmune condition called primary sclerosing cholangitis, sometimes seen in association with other autoimmune conditions such as ulcerative colitis (see the large intestine), and which may progress to cirrhosis and liver failure. More commonly it is due to ascending infection arising from acute cholecystitis as a result of bacterial infection complicating gall bladder disease. This is a serious condition with abdominal pains, jaundice and swinging fevers causing rigors (shaking of the body). Urgent medical attention is mandatory.
