Chronic Active Hepatitis

Chronic active hepatitis is a condition usually caused by autoimmune attack on the liver cells which more commonly affects young women, but can present in girls as young as 7. There is often an association with other autoimmune diseases such as thyroid disease or rheumatoid arthritis. The liver is chronically inflamed and without treatment it may lead to the development of cirrhosis. Immunosuppressant therapy, possibly using steroids, may be effective.
