Biliary Atresia

Biliary atresia is the failure of formation of the ducts that lead bile from the liver to the gall bladder and, via the bile duct, into the bowel. It is a congenital condition whose cause is unknown, but which present with increasing jaundice during the first few weeks of life. Surgery is necessary to allow the bile to drain into the bowel. Even when successful there is still a possibility of the later development of cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Liver transplantation may be required.
