Kidneys and Urinary Tract

The Kidneys lie one either side of the spine against the back wall of the abdomen, up against the diaphragm, the muscle that separates it from the chest cavity. Their function is the purification of the blood by the removal of waste products and the formation of urine, the maintenance of the composition of the blood by controlling the secretion and reabsorption of salts such as sodium and potassium chloride, and the production of hormones such as Erythropoietin (necessary for the formation of blood cells) and Renin (involved in salt retention and the control of blood-pressure). They are also involved in the metabolism of Vitamin D, necessary for the proper formation of bones.
