Vesico-ureteric Reflux

Vesico-ureteric reflux describes the condition where urine passes back up the ureters from the bladder during urination. Under normal circumstances the ureters enter the bladder at an oblique angle, so that when the muscle of the bladder contracts the end of the ureter is closed and urine cannot reflux towards the kidney. If the connection between the ureters and the bladder is not oblique then urine may return under pressure and damage the kidney, causing scarring. This produces reduced renal function. It may be possible to diagnose antenatally using ultrasound. Surgical correction in order to prevent further reflux and continuing kidney damage may be required, as may continuous low-dose antibiotics to prevent infection.
