Non-Specific Urethritis

Non-specific urethritis is inflammation of the urethra without an identifiable bacterial infection. It maybe part of a sexually transmitted disease, with the responsible agent being chlamydia, or maybe a consequence of prostatitis (inflammation in the prostate) or epididymitis (inflammation in the epididymis). The symptoms are of pain and burning on passing water, frequency of urination and often nocturia (getting up in the night to pass water). It is necessary to exclude the presence of other causes of urethritis such as gonorrhoea. Should there be any sign of blood in the urine it is necessary to investigate in order to exclude the possibility of other underlying problems such as bladder cancer.
