Non-Specific Urethritis
Non-specific urethritis is inflammation of the urethra without an identifiable bacterial infection. It does not occur in children, but it can affect sexually active adolescents. It is usually a sexually transmitted disease, with the responsible agent being chlamydia, or maybe a consequence of prostatitis (inflammation in the prostate) or epididymitis (inflammation in the epididymis) - see the male genital tract section. The symptoms are of pain and burning on passing water, frequency of urination and often nocturia (getting up in the night to pass water). It is necessary to exclude the presence of other causes of urethritis such as gonorrhoea.
