Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is defined as the inadvertent passing of urine. We achieve continence as children by learning to inhibit the reflex opening of the voluntary sphincter when the bladder muscle (called the detrusor muscle) contracts. Incontinence in the male arises either because of damage to the nerve supply of the sphincters, because of damage to centres of awareness due to stroke or dementing illness (see the brain in the head section), or because of chronic urinary retention with overflow, usually because of obstruction due to an enlarged prostate. (see the prostate in the male genitalia section)
