Cystitis

Cystitis is inflammation in the bladder, and, unlike in females, in males must be investigated to exclude an underlying cause such as a stone, a cancer or rare conditions such as a fistula between the bowel and the bladder as a result of inflammation in a bowel diverticulum (see the large intestine in the digestive tract section). Repeated attacks of cystitis may occur in men with bladder out flow obstruction who do not empty their bladders completely, since static urine is likely to become infected. Surgery may be required - either to remove the enlarged prostate or to incise the bladder neck.
