Umbilical Hernia

Umbilical hernia is the situation where the umbilicus (the tummy button) fails to close completely at birth, so that some of the abdominal contents push through it. (A hernia is the abnormal protrusion of tissue into a place it shouldn’t be). It’s commoner in premature babies, and Afro-Caribbeans. Unless they’re large and causing symptoms they’re best left alone: most will close spontaneously before the age of 5. Sticking coins over them, held down by sticky tape, does not help.
