Tropical sprue

Tropical sprue is the name given to a condition causing chronic diarrhoea, weight loss and malabsorption producing vitamin deficiency over a period of months following residence in a tropical area. This is thought to be due to an infective agent, although none has been isolated. While symptoms may resolve once residence in the tropics is over, long-term treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics such as tetracycline may be required.
