Steatorrhoea
Steatorrhoea is the name used to describe the condition where there is an increased amount of fat passed via the bowel, producing stools which are pale, greasy, offensive and difficult to flush away. This is due to malabsorption of fat either because of pancreatic disease (see disorders of the pancreas in the digestive tract section) or small intestinal disease such as coeliac disease. Pancreatic disease needs treatment with pancreatic enzyme supplements, while coeliac disease requires dietary manipulation.
