Salmonella

What you need to know:

All the advice given for gastroenteritis is relevant to this condition. But although salmonella can be extremely serious in the young, pregnant and elderly, most adults recover fully within a few weeks. The major complication is that salmonella is a common triggering factor in the development of irritable bowel syndrome.

One of the most common causes of salmonella infection, is under-cooked poultry and shellfish - again, see gastroenteritis.

So never eat:

Salmonella is highly infectious and some sufferers may remain carriers for many years. Anyone working in the food industry who contracts this infection should be thoroughly checked once they’ve recovered and shouldn’t be allowed to work in catering until all their tests are clear.
