Omphalocoele

Omphalocoele - also called exomphalos - is the condition where the midgut, having spent its time outside the abdominal cavity during development, fails to return as it should. This means a variable amount of the intestine is present outside the umbilicus at birth: surgery is required to return it and close the abdomen. It is diagnosed before birth by ultrasound. Why it occurs is unknown, but it is often in association with other birth defects.
