Milk protein sensitivity
Milk protein sensitivity is a common condition where there is an immune attack on the bowel wall, causing shrinkage of the villi - the finger-like projections in the small bowel responsible for the absorption of nutrients in the diet - or, more rarely, inflammation and ulceration of the wall of the colon (the large bowel) - a condition called enterocolitis. The sensitivity can be to cow’s milk protein, milk made from soya beans, or both. Elimination of the suspect milk, and the use of formula milk with protein that has been split by a process called hydrolysis, should relieve symptoms.
