Hand foot and mouth disease is caused by infection with an entero-virus (one of a group of viruses that replicate in the human gut) called the Coxsackie virus which is spread by the faecal-oral route (which can be blocked by good hygiene). There are blisters on the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, the buttocks and the tongue. They resolve over a few days. There is no treatment.
