Leg ulcers

What you need to know:

Most of these injuries are caused by supermarket trolleys: you already have varicose veins and some careless person bumps into you and causes a very painful injury.

These ulcers can be very resistant to treatment and they may need repeated dressings for months or even years, with the addition of pressure bandages. Very recently, natural remedies have come to the rescue and the use of New Zealand active Manuka honey applied directly to the ulcers often produces dramatic results - sterile Manuka honey dressings are now available too.

Other useful advice:

You should also avoid standing for long periods. Whenever you sit, put your feet up. Don’t on hard-edged chairs. Don’t cross your legs. Although it may be painful, try to walk a little and often during the day. When you’re sitting or lying, try to contract and relax the thigh muscles, point and raise the feet, clench the toes and rotate the ankles. That helps push blood back up the leg and keep the circulation working more efficiently.
