Erythema multiforme

Erythema means a reddening of the skin due to dilation of underlying blood vessels; multiforme means that it appears in different shapes. This is a condition caused by an allergic response, often to a drug or a foodstuff. The red areas are sometimes described as resembling targets. In its most severe form, called Steven's Johnson syndrome, it causes swelling blistering and cracking of the mouth and lips, and can be life-threatening - one cause is antibiotics of the sulphonamide group. Steroid treatment may be required.
