Dandruff

Dandruff is scaling of the skin of the scalp, and sometimes also the eyebrows, eyelashes and the beard area in bearded men. It is caused by colonisation of the skin by a yeast called Piyrosporum ovale which causes irritation and the production and shedding of increased numbers of cells. There is also increased production of sebum, which is an oily substance that lubricates hair growth - for this reason the condition is also known as seborrhoeic dermatitis. There are effective treatments available.
