Cough

Coughing is the body's way of getting rid of foreign matter from the lungs and lower respiratory tract. Coughs can be brought on from cigarette smoke, dust, exhaust fumes or food that has gone the wrong way. Another common cause of coughing is from mucous build up after an infection such as a cold or influenza. This can contribute to inflammation of the bronchi, a condition known as acute bronchitis.

Chronic bronchitis is caused by repeated irritation from smoking, foggy weather and damp air, leading to an overproduction of mucous in the lungs. If left untreated the mucous can get infected by bacteria and make it very difficult to breath. This puts more strain on the heart, as oxygen supplies are depleted.
