Diphtheria
Diphtheria is a disorder caused by a toxin secreted by a bacterium called corynae bacterium diphtheriae. While this has been mainly eradicated in the Western World as a result of vaccination, it occurs in the tropics. Initially it affects the tonsils, producing a membrane which may block the throat. The toxin attacks the nerves, the skin and may affect the heart and circulation, causing circulatory collapse. Those in contact with diphtheria, who are not immune, may need antibiotics to prevent them developing it. The progress of the disease may be reduced by the use of anti toxin.
