Menisceal tears

Menisceal tears are tears of the cartilage inside the knee, usually as a result of a twisting injury during sport. The cartilages are in the shape of half-moons (and so are called semi lunar) and the tear often affects the outer rim. This can flap up and down like a bucket handle, and jam the joint, causing pain and swelling. If possible the tear should be repaired surgically, since removal of the cartilage may predispose to the early development of osteoarthritis in the joint.
