Baker's cyst

Baker's cyst is an out-pouching of the membrane that forms the capsule of the knee into the space behind it, where it causes a swelling. This may cause pain, particularly if it is large, and difficulty in bending the knee. Occasionally they rupture and cause severe pain down the calf. They occur more frequently in patients who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. They require drainage, and if they are recurrent, surgical removal of the excess membrane.
