Irritable Hip

Irritable hip is the term used to describe pain in the hip which is caused by inflammation of the synovium, the membrane lining the joint. All movements are painful and the child will refuse to weight bear on the affected leg. Unlike septic arthritis affecting the hip there is no pain at rest and the child is not otherwise unwell. It may follow a mild viral illness. X-ray of the hip is normal, unlike slipped upper femoral epiphysis, and the condition resolves with bed rest, traction and anti-inflammatory medication.
