Congenital Dislocation of the Hip

Congenital dislocation of the hip means that at birth the head of the femur is not within the acetabulum. While this may occur in any infant it is more likely in those who are premature, or in those in a breech presentation at birth. The dislocation may be apparent on examination of the neonate: ultrasound will confirm the diagnosis. Congenital dislocation of the hip needs active management in order to ensure normal development both of the hip and mobility.
