Fracture
Fracture of the hip is the most common traumatic fracture affecting the elderly. It usually occurs after a fall in a patient with thin bones as a result of osteoporosis. Most commonly the break is between the ball at the top - called the head - and the shaft, so the part that’s broken is the neck. There are a number of possible operations to stabilise the break while it heals, but some will need joint replacement. Reducing osteoporosis would, of course, reduce the number of hip fractures.
