Coxa Vara

Coxa Vara is a condition where the angle between the neck of the femur and the shaft is less than that normally found (about 125 degrees). This may be a result of congenital problems such as congenital dislocation of the hip, or problems occurring in childhood such as slipped upper femoral epiphysis. In adulthood it can arise following a fractured neck of femur, or in conditions where there is demineralisation of bone, for example following osteomalacia. Since it produces true shortening of the leg it causes a limp, and may cause pain and postural problems.
