Bunions (Hallux valgus)

Hallux valgus is the name given to the condition where the great toe (the hallux) points away from the midline (valgus). This means that the joint between the toe and the metatarsal bone behind it is pushed outwards. While this may be a familial feature, it is much worsened by the wearing of tight shoes which push the toes together, and high heels which force them downwards. The pressure of the joint against the footwear causes the skin and the underlying capsule to become inflamed - this is a bunion. Pain and discomfort may be helped by attention to footwear, by using wedges to try and push the toes straight, or using protective pads, but severe cases need surgery to straighten the toe.
