Hallux rigidus

Hallux rigidus is caused by arthritis of the joint between the great toe (the hallux) and the metatarsal bone behind it - the metatarso-phalangeal joint. There is pain and stiffness and the joint does not flex on walking, which becomes difficult. It may be helped by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, by exercises, or by joint injection. Rarely surgery to remove the joint and fix the toe may be required. The cause is unknown but it may occasionally follow trauma when the toe gets stubbed against a solid object.
