Pulmonary Embolus
Pulmonary embolus is the name given to the situation that arises when part of a blood clot in a vein breaks off and travels up through the bloodstream, through the right side of a heart, to lodge in the blood vessels in the lungs. If this is a large embolus the effect may be fatal. In the United Kingdom 20,000 patients each year die as a result of pulmonary emboli. Smaller emboli cause pain, shortness of breath and increased heart rate. They require treatment to thin the blood.
